What’s fair use got to do with it – limits on AI’s hoover up?

yeah, what’s fair use about, about for the news?
what’s fair use but an old-fashioned notion?
what’s fair got to say, got to say about it?
who needs copyright when hoovering up is so easy?

there’s a case that fits
it’s legality
a court room awaits …
criminality?

it may seem i’m overreacting
when you copy out my words …
if i’m sounding pissed, you’ve posted it
where it’s not legit

oh, what’s fair use about, about for these times?
what’s fair use but an old-fashioned notion?
what’s fair got to say, got to say about it?
who needs copyright when those bytes are so easy?

Since 2020 there’ve been lawsuits against AI companies for violating US copyright law (one early case “is still winding its way through the court system.”). How’s that legal landscape evolved since the pandemic? – since the generative AI gold rush began (2022). Is the only choice for content publishers in court or compact?

• Wired > “Every AI Copyright Lawsuit in the US, Visualized” by Kate Knibbs (Dec 19, 2024) – WIRED is following every copyright battle involving the AI industry – and we’ve created some handy visualizations that will be updated as the cases progress.

Nearly every major generative AI company has been pulled into this legal fight, including OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, and Nvidia.

Other cases, like the closely-watched lawsuit filed by The New York Times against OpenAI and Microsoft, are currently in contentious discovery periods, during which both parties are arguing over what information they need to turn over.
